To enhance international teachers’ understanding of Beijing’s Central Axis culture and intangible cultural heritage, and to enrich their living and working experience in China, the International Affairs Office (IAO) organized a cultural field trip themed “Exploring the Drum Tower on the Central Axis and Experiencing Intangible Cultural Heritage Incense Making” on the afternoon of October 30. Teachers from the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Japan, Germany and other countries participated in the activity.

Upon arrival at the Drum and Bell Tower Square, the IAO faculty provided a bilingual introduction, outlining the historical development of the Drum Tower and its significance as the northern starting point of Beijing’s Central Axis.
Subsequently, under the guidance of professionals, the teachers went through a series of steps—including smelling, identifying, selecting, and making incense. They were immersed in the profound heritage of traditional incense culture and the unique charm of the craftsmanship, personally crafting incense plaques (Xiangpai) with their own distinctive styles.

Through digital interactive displays, the teachers learned about the ancient timekeeping system in which drums and bells were played in alternation, and climbed the tower to enjoy a panoramic view of Beijing’s Central Axis. As the timekeeping center of Beijing during the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, the Drum Tower left a strong impression on all international teachers.

By combining hands-on cultural experience with an on-site tour, the activity enabled international teachers to appreciate the charm of fine traditional Chinese culture in a relaxed atmosphere, further strengthening their sense of identification with and belonging to Beijing’s urban culture. Going forward, the IAO will continue to use intangible cultural heritage and other resources as carriers for cultural exchange, drawing on Beijing’s rich historical heritage to build bridges for people-to-people understanding and help international teachers better understand China and integrate into campus life.
