On November 29th, the 8th Beijing College Student Drama Festival, sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Education Working Committee, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission, and organized by the Central Academy of Drama and the Beijing Children’s Palace, came to a successful conclusion at the Central Academy of Drama. BCU selected competition entry Chess, an original one-act play, was invited to participate and won the gold medal in the professional group.
The original one-act play Chess was completed by a team of teachers from the School of Performing Arts, including Mr. Li Peng as the director, Ms. Su Na as the playwright, Mr. Zhang Zhonghuan as the lighting designer, and Mr. Zhou Yuanshen as the music and sound director. The play tells the story of an elderly man chatting with time by a quiet chessboard, revisiting the past in some picture frames, and ultimately returning to confront himself. Through a unique dialogue perspective, it leads the audience through the years. The collision between the past and the present, the interweaving of conflict and warmth, is full of tension and thought-provoking.
A total of 87 entries from 44 universities were received at this Beijing College Student Drama Festival, including multi-act plays, one-act plays, short plays, and recitations, covering various forms such as drama, Peking Opera, and musicals. Chess stood out among the many entries, fully demonstrating the fruitful results of artistic practice education of BCU.
